Read&Write GOLD assists with studying as well as conducting
research. The Study Skills tools help with active
reading, writing and learning. The research features make it
easy to collect, collate and present research for assignments.

Calculator
You can access a simple or scientific talking calculator from
within Read&Write GOLD! In addition to maths calculations, you
can use the calculator for conversions, such as length, mass,
velocity, time, temperature and volume. You can even calculate
equations within a document.

"Dyslexic
students often report they just 'know the answer' in Maths
calculations and find breaking the answer down into little steps
really difficult; unfortunately some assessments require the
working out of the answer to be shown. The calculator feature of
Read&Write GOLD breaks down the solution into visible steps
which helps the student really understand what their brain has
processed and this is a real morale boost."

Fact
Finder
The Fact Finder is a web search tool that makes finding
information on the internet easier and faster. If you wish to find
out more information about a topic, simply highlight the word and
click on the Fact Finder. Read&Write GOLD then displays the
online search results for your word so you can continue your
research. It is a quick and easy way of conducting research and
gathering information for reports.

"Read&Write GOLD allows students to efficiently
collect specific information from sources and export that
information into a document. This has been a huge resource for
students that are collecting research, and has allowed the research
process to become more organised and
meaningful."
Sean Joyce,
Joliet Public Schools-District 86

Fact
Folder
If you have a number of facts from various sources that you
would like to collate and organise, use the Fact Folder. It
automatically produces a bibliography of the information sources
and allows you to add the date, author and category name. This is
useful when collecting information for assignments or reports.

take notes in meetings, write minutes, proof read my work, compose
emails and store facts using the Fact Folder."

Fact
Mapper
Mind mapping is a perfect tool for when you are brainstorming,
mapping out ideas and creating essays. With the Fact Mapper,
you build your own visual mind map - adding elements, sticky notes
and imagery. You can then easily export the elements into an
outline. This visual map is important for organising and preparing
work before starting to write, and is especially helpful to visual
learners.

"The Fact Mapper is one hundred per cent
loved by every student so far, right through from years 7 to 13,
whether they have any learning difficulties or not! It improves
efficient and specific access to information from the internet.
More able students also like the Fact Folder to store information
and images for project work and research."

Study Skills
Highlighters
Read&Write GOLD has coloured highlighters that you can use
to highlight sections of text, such as main ideas, supporting
details and a list of vocabulary. You can extract highlighted text
from Word documents and web pages to create study guides,
outlines or complete assignments. Highlights from multiple
documents or web pages will be collected into a single document
including a bibliography. This makes it easy to collate related
information, start an outline or create a study guide. This is
useful when gathering information for a project from many different
sources.

"I use the Study Skills Highlighting
feature to gather important points from lecture notes that have
been emailed to me and also to collect information from the VLE
(Virtual Learning Environment) website."
Amie Swinton, student at Carnegie
College & Telford College

Vocabulary List Builder
You can easily build a vocabulary list by either selecting words
in a document or web page using the highlighters or by entering the
words manually. The Vocabulary List Builder creates a Microsoft
Word document with the vocabulary words, definitions and images
representing each word. This tool helps to expand your vocabulary
skills. (NB. The Vocabulary List Builder video is at the end of the
Study Skills video included below)

"The feature that has helped me the
most is the Vocabulary List Builder. My vocabulary is weak because
I am hard of hearing and it is said that you must hear words over
and over a number of times before you can fully
understand their meaning. In college, professors expect a
larger and more complete vocabulary and I have been able to expand
and understand vocabulary much better. Thank you for all you
do!"
Ben Leavitt,
student at University of Vermont
