Hearing text read aloud with dual
colour highlighting helps with comprehension and word recognition.
SpeechStream offers:
Text-to-Speech
It is often much easier to understand a block of text by
listening to it, particularly if the student struggles to read.
Text-to-Speech reads aloud text with dual colour
highlighting. Individual words are highlighted in one colour as
they are spoken while the sentence is highlighted in another
colour - this dual colour highlighting has been proven to
raise comprehension levels by 20%.
The student can select their preferred reading voice and set the
playback speed to suit their individual needs. They can also have
the option of reading word by word, one sentence at a time, one
paragraph at a time, or continuously.
Dictionary
An online talking dictionary is available to provide definitions
for a selected word. Definitions and parts of speech are displayed
to increase word understanding. All definitions and sentences can
also be read aloud. Publishers can augment the dictionary database
or replace it with their own glossary words and definitions.
Picture Dictionary
When a student comes across a word they are unsure of, they can
search the Picture Dictionary for a visual image to better
understand the meaning of the word. Images can also be copied
into Word documents.
Translator
Students can use the Word Translator to translate single words
into another language chosen by the publisher.
Support for MathML
SpeechStream can be used to read MathML supported content. Pages
with MathML use the xhtml format supported in Firefox. Internet
Explorer can display the page with the MathPlayer plugin.
