Text to Speech
It is often much easier to understand a block of text by
listening to it, particularly if you struggle to read. This feature
reads aloud with dual highlighting text found in
documents or on the web. You can select your preferred
reading voice and set the pitch, speed, and volume to suit your
individual needs. You also have the option of reading word by
word, one sentence at a time, one paragraph at a time, or
continuously.
Individual words are highlighted in one color as they are spoken
while the sentence is highlighted in another color - this dual
color highlighting has been proven to raise comprehension
levels by 20%.

"I can scan any book,
worksheet, etc. into the computer so that the software can read it
aloud. I no longer have to sit right beside the kids reading the
information to them! They know how to turn on the toolbar and
select the information that they want Read&Write to read for
them. Kids, especially those with severe learning (reading)
disabilities, love having the ability to be independent
learners!"

Reader
There are times when text can't be read aloud as it is part of
an image, contained within inaccessible Flash, or found in a
locked PDF. Read&Write GOLD has the ability to read aloud
even this inaccessible digital text as well as text found in online
applications, including course management systems, credit recovery
applications, remedial learning programs, and online assessments.
Examples of applications that are accessible using Read&Write
GOLD are: Accelerated Reader, Blackboard, Cognitive Tutor, MAP
tests, ModuMath, NovaNET, and Study Island. With Screenshot Reader,
you can select any part of the screen or any text to be read
aloud with dual color highlighting. You can even export
the text directly into a Microsoft Word document.
Screenshot Reader truly differentiates Read&Write
GOLD from the rest. See Screenshot
Reader working with Third Party Applications.

"If I had to pick only one
[out of the many] features that I love the most in
Read&Write GOLD, it would be Screenshot Reader. I love it
because of how easy it is to use, because it provides INSTANT
access to content that was once inaccessible and because there is
nothing like it on the market today! I use it to gain quick and
easy text-to-speech access to content that was once impossible to
access. For people like me who have difficulties reading text,
Screenshot Reader is an invaluable tool that I cannot live
without!"

"My favorite option is DAISY Reader.
With the networked Read&Write GOLD, we save IT time (and
annoyance) and the DAISY Reader video tour is so good that we save
assistive technology time too!"

Screen Masking
If you have trouble focusing on the screen or need a visual
reference, use Screen Masking. It masks out the active or
non-active parts of the screen like an overlay. Other masking
types include: tinting the whole screen, mouse spotlighting,
and underlining the point in the document where you are
typing.

"My favorite feature is Screen Masking. I use
"follow mouse pointer" when I am teaching a whole group lesson to
provide a strong visual reference for students to follow along.
When students are typing I use the various screen masking options
to reduce visual distraction. This feature has helped to improve
student focus, increase on task behavior, and highly motivate my
students through the use of technology."

"My favorite feature is PDF Aloud. Since
many of my students have challenges of following oral directions,
this feature allows me to pre-write a series of directions for all
the different activities we do with Read&Write GOLD (e.g.
research social studies topics online, etc.). The prewritten
directions allow the students to open the PDF and listen to the
directions with the visual support of the printed word and practice
this skill of learning to follow oral
directions."
