Spell Check Icon  Phonetic Spell Checker

The Phonetic Spell Checker assists you in checking for spelling errors and selecting correctly spelled words. Even the most unusual spelling errors, mirror letters, and flexible spelling, such as typing words without vowels, are recognized.  Suggestions as well as their definitions are provided, and can be read aloud so you can be sure to choose the correct replacement word.

"One of my favorite features is the phonetic spell check. As a special education teacher my students rely a lot on the sounds of the words and not necessarily the special rules that show up all over the English language. This allows them the ability to write freely and at length, and worry about content and not about spelling. It gives them great confidence!"

Word Prediction Icon  Word Prediction

Word Prediction can learn your writing style and predict the word you may want to use next. As you type, a list of suggested words appears in the Prediction Panel. Definitions of the words are also available and can be read aloud, helping to build your vocabulary and develop your writing skills. Use Word Prediction to help you construct sentences with ease!  Over 100 subject-specific prediction word banks are available, such as Astronomy and Human Skeletal System. Custom word banks can also be added.

Sounds Like Icon  Sounds Like and Confusable Words Checker

The Sounds Like (Homophone) and Confusable Words Checker identifies words that sound the same but are spelled differently such as "eye" and "I" or words that are commonly confused, such as "through" and "thorough". When checking your writing or reading it aloud, these words might not be picked up. Multiple alternatives with audible definitions and sample sentences are given so you can be confident you have chosen the right word for your writing. Using this feature is often the last step when editing a paper before handing it in.

"My favorite feature is the Homophone Checker (now the Sounds Like and Confusable Words Checker in Version 10). This tool is a great way for anyone to proofread text before submitting. The Homophone Checker allows student to check often confused words in their writing. I use this for ALL students, not just students on IEPs, because, as I tell my students, this isn't just good assistive technology, it is just good technology for us all. I wish I would've had this tool in high school and college myself!"

"I am an individual with Raynaud's and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the mechanics of typing can be very strenuous. As a third year medical student rotating in the hospital, I have numerous patient notes to complete. Happily, Read&Write GOLD has helped me to get my work done. I love the Speech Input feature because it allows me to dictate the patient notes in a manner, which not only saves me time, but spares me the physical strain of typing. I am amazed by the positive impact this simple tool has made in my education and performance!"

Speak While Typing

Choose this option to hear each word read aloud as you type.  You can also choose to read aloud the entire document when finished. By listening to your work read aloud, you can correct and self-edit your work before submitting it, thereby reducing many common errors.

"My favorite use of Read&Write GOLD is the reading of students' original writing. This allows them to self-edit before they read it to someone else or the teacher. They can also make sure it says exactly what they want to say. It empowers the student and gives them the power to write more."
