"At first we only put Read&Write GOLD onto the computers in the Learning Support ICT suite but, due to its success, we're now looking to roll out to all computers throughout the school with the application accessible through the school's Intranet.
Initially, only students with a specific literacy difficulty or another Special Educational Need were using Read&Write GOLD. We found that it dramatically increased the volume and quality of work that students could do as reading and writing were no longer a hindrance due to their new ability to edit their own work and hear what it sounds like as they type. Now, their ideas flow and they can get their thoughts down onto 'paper' more easily. However, now some students with no literacy problems at all are utilising Read&Write and are keen to explore what it can do for them.
The principal function used is the Text-to-Speech feature as it allows students to really comprehend what they read and get a sense of whether their scripts flow well or not. The Word Prediction tool also really helps and we've noticed that the older students are automatically using the Dictionary whilst working. But the real success of Read&Write is the leap in confidence of our students. They can now do high quality work far more quickly, thus keeping up with their peers.
