New updates bring more options to Fluency Tutor users

As a go-to tool for educators wanting to help students improve reading fluency and comprehension, Fluency Tutor® for Google™ remains one of the most popular literacy apps in the Google environment.

Starting today, we’re introducing even more features to help both students and teachers get the most out of Fluency Tutor - all while continuing to save valuable class time.

Help students find assignments quicker

One of the first questions students ask after opening Fluency Tutor is where to find reading passages that have been assigned to them. Depending on how a teacher assigns a passage, it could show up in Google Drive, Google Classroom, or even in the student’s email inbox. Now there’s a quick and easy way for students to check for newly assigned passages directly from their dashboard…

Simply click the Google Drive or Google Classroom links in the notification at the top of the dashboard, or from the menu on the left of the screen.

This will send students directly to Google Drive and display any assigned passages, or to their assignment page in Google Classroom.

More detailed feedback

A frequent request from Fluency Tutor users is to give students more information related to the mistakes they’ve made. Now students can hover over any word marked as an error to see the type of error they’ve made along with a simple description of the error. Errors are also color coded to highlight similar errors made throughout the passage.

Add Lexile levels to custom passages

All passages that come with Fluency Tutor for Google are assigned a Lexile level and other reading measurement levels to help educators quickly assess the difficulty of the passage. Unfortunately any custom content created in Fluency Tutor has not contained this information - until now. With the latest update, teachers can now easily add Lexile levels to the custom content they create.

Enhanced Support for Google Classroom

If you’re a Google Classroom user, we’ve finally made it possible to select individual students from Google Classroom when sharing a passage. This means that teachers no longer have to create separate Classrooms for subgroups of students at different reading levels. Simply find or create a passage, choose ‘Share with Classroom’, then choose the students you’d like to share the passage with. Students will see their assigned passages immediately in the assignments area of Google Classroom.

Share custom content with your entire domain

Fluency Tutor domain customers can also share custom passages with their entire domain! This is a great feature for school districts with common content used across classrooms. Activating this feature couldn’t be easier for teachers. Simply create content like always, then before sharing, click ‘Share with my domain’. This allows any other teacher in the domain to access the content when searching for passages.

Note: This feature is only available for districts that have purchased Fluency Tutor for their domain. For more information, please fill out our Contact Us form.

Additional language support options

If you’re one of the many teachers using Fluency Tutor to help students learning additional languages, you’ll be happy to hear that the dictionary and picture dictionary support tools are now available in Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

To use, first create or select a passage in Spanish, French, or Portuguese. Then when reviewing the passage, go to Options and choose the dictionary and picture dictionary setting that matches the language of the passage.

When students open the passage, they’ll now be able to use the appropriate dictionary and picture dictionary tools to support their learning.

Try Fluency Tutor today

If you’re not already using Fluency Tutor for Google, you can install it free from the Chrome Web Store. Remember, all features are free for the first 30 days, and the ability to share passages with students and hear their progress remains free forever.
