Accessing ePubs in Google Drive

Google Drive is best known as a site you visit to create and access Google Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations and Forms.  However, you can also use Google Drive as a storage area for many other file types including images, PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, audio files and more.  The main difference is how these files are displayed.  For example, if you open a native Microsoft Word document through Google Drive it will open in a “viewer” so that you can see the file, but not edit it (unless you choose to convert it to a Google Document). PDF’s work the same.

Unfortunately one type of document that you can store, but not view in Google Drive is an ePub file.  ePub is short for electronic publication and is an e-book standard used by publishers across the globe.  Many books purchased or accessed online come in an ePub format.  However, if you use Google Drive to store your files being able to access ePub documents is very important.

This is another reason why Read&Write for Google Chrome, Texthelp’s new literacy support tool for Google, is so important.  It not only makes Google Docs accessible, but also contains premium features that do the same for ePub and PDF files.  After installing and authorizing Read&Write for Google Chrome from the Chrome Web Store you can choose to open both ePubs and PDFs with the extension.  This will open the document in Texthelp’s viewer, which contain several literacy supports including Text-to-Speech, Highlights, Annotations, Translator and more.

This video provides a short overview of how the PDF/ePub Reader contained within Read&Write for Google Chrome works.
