Supporting students in Northern Ireland

Schools in Northern Ireland have access to our literacy support software, Read&Write through the C2K network. To help students across the country read, write and study with ease and confidence. The toolbar is easily accessible across any device, whether in class or learning at home.

How to get Read&Write

Teachers and students can get started by installing Read&Write on your device by following our step by step guides below. You will need your C2K email address (for example another123@c2ken.net) and password to sign in. If you have a @c2kni.net address, all you need to do is make a slight change to @c2ken.net instead. Get in touch with the school if you don’t know the child’s C2K email account information.

If you work in Early Years, a non-statutory school or a school not connected to C2K, please contact our team to get access to Read&Write.

Education Authority staff can also get set up with Read&Write using their eani.org.uk email address.

For every student, in every class

A year long study identified that 66% of Read&Write users saw an improvement in reading age, compared to non Read&Write users (27%)

Read&Write is a literacy support toolbar, proven to improve students’ reading and writing, using features including text-to-speech, picture dictionaries and word prediction. Whilst our tools are essential for students with additional learning needs, English language learners, or pupils in a low attainment group, every student can benefit from using Read&Write to build their confidence, understanding and engagement in learning.

Having trouble getting set up?

Read&Write has become an invaluable resource for our pupils with literacy difficulties. It promotes independence and allows our pupils to overcome barriers to learning. As a resource for examinations, it has proven to be invaluable! Its use as a computer reader within exams has given our pupils the opportunity to access the reading materials in a way that they are used to. This greatly reduces any barriers and opens the opportunity for our pupils to achieve their potential.

Language Learning Support

Are you learning in a new language or even learning a modern foreign language such as French or Spanish? Read&Write can help.

Modern Foreign Languages

Spanish is the language most frequently taught in Northern Ireland's schools, followed by French. Read&Write for Google Chrome can build and develop vocabulary and written/oral fluency in modern languages through text to speech, translation and dictionaries that can help support every aspect of MFL study.

Switching languages in Read&Write

Whether you’re being taught in a language that isn’t your first language or you need support for your language lessons, the Read&Write toolbar can help. Read&Write can be used with language localisation in a few languages (with more to come!) where you can change the dialogue to be set up in another language.

Supporting Irish-medium students

For Irish-medium students and Irish Language Learners, Read&Write now fully supports text-to-speech in Irish. This means students can use Select to Speak (Play), Click to speak, Hover Speak and Audio Maker to listen to any Irish text read aloud. Find out how to access the Irish voice within Read&Write for Google Chrome.

Without doubt, the best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in the language. With Read&Write, learners will be able to listen to the language and a pace that they choose in their own home.

Supporting SEN students

The features in the Read&Write toolbar give extra help to students with additional learning needs.

Check out this guide that explains how different tools can be helpful for students with reading & writing difficulties, visual impairments, motion and dexterity issues and more. To help them reach their full potential, whether they're in class, at home or in an exam.

Use in exams

Read&Write can be used as a computer reader in exams, allowing those with appropriate access arrangements to sit their exams independently without the need for a human reader. As computer readers are a JCQ approved acceptable arrangement, students can use Read&Write in exam mode to hear exam content read aloud, ensuring only approved features are used. Making it ideal for the GCSE English Language paper where a human reader is not permitted.

Read&Write in exams is also ideal for boosting students’ confidence and reduces the time and cost for schools when prepping for exams. It can easily be installed on any device your school plans to use for exams, even if these are standalone devices, not managed by the C2K network.
