Get Read&Write for Google Chrome in school

Discover how teachers and students in Northern Ireland can start using Read&Write for Google Chrome in class.

To hear text read out loud, or to translate content to an alternative language, use the orange SPEAK icon.

Follow the steps below to start using Read&Write for Google Chrome in class.

If you work in Early Years, a non-statutory school or a school not connected to C2K, please contact our team to get access to Read&Write.

Teachers and students should log into the Google Chrome browser using their C2K (@c2ken) school email address and password. Your C2K email address and password is available from the school.

If you work for the EANI please use your eani.org.uk email address.

First, Click on 'sign in' in the top right corner.

Then enter the child's C2K email, followed by their password.

Once logged in, click on the purple Read&Write puzzle piece icon in the top right corner of the Chrome browser.

If asked to log in to Read&Write, use the same email address and password.

The toolbar will appear on screen, ready to be used.

Texthelp PDF Reader

Did you know you can use features of the Read&Write toolbar when viewing PDFs? To do this, you’ll need to use the Texthelp PDF Reader extension.

You should see the PDF reader icon pinned at the top right hand corner of your Chrome browser.

If you can not locate the extension, simply visit the chrome store to install the ‘Texthelp PDF Reader App’, by simply clicking ‘Add to Chrome’.

Once the extension is installed, get started by locating a PDF in your Google Drive. Simply right click the file and choose ‘Open with’ followed by ‘Read&Write for Google Chrome’.

Your PDF will now open with the Read&Write toolbar.

You can also make Read&Write your default PDF viewer by going to Google Drive settings and choosing Manage apps, then check “Use by Default"

Texthelp Screenshot Reader

To make use of the screenshot reader feature within the Read&Write toolbar, you will need to install Texthelp’s screenshot reader extension to your Chrome browser. Follow the instructions below to get set up, it should only take a few seconds.

Open the Read&Write toolbar, and click on the Screenshot Reader icon.

You will automatically be brought to the Chrome store where you can install the Screenshot reader extension. Simply click ‘Add to Chrome’

Once installed, you can use the screenshot reader feature within the toolbar.

Simply click the icon and just drag your mouse over any text in an image or diagram, and it will be read aloud.
