  • Speaker: Brea Ratliff (former President of the Benjamin Banneker Association)

Session Description: Number is a complex domain of mathematics, however it is one that young children understand and engage with even before entering school. The ability to work fluently with numbers and mathematical operations is a crucial prerequisite for future studies in mathematics as well as mathematics and science-based careers. Citizens who lack the ability to understand mathematically are limited in their participation in many aspects of society. They lose out on opportunities and become less effective in their day-to-day lives due to their inability to do basic math. Mathematical thinking and proficiency is essential to learning, and it is an ability that all students should develop.
