Exams and Assessment

Examination time can be a stressful period for any student, but for students who struggle with reading and writing, this time of year can often be overwhelming.

For students, not only do we provide support in the classroom, but we’re helping them to achieve their full potential in exams too, in line with JCQ regulations, facilitating independence and boosting their confidence.

For institutions and educators, accommodating access arrangements using a human reader can be a costly and time-consuming exercise. Implementing computer readers in place of human readers is both cost effective and efficient for the institution too, especially in the preparation of and during busy exam periods.

Ensuring exam regulations deliver equity of access

Hundreds of thousands of students sit formal examinations in the UK every year.  Many of them require access arrangements or reasonable adjustments to be put in place so that they can access exam content at the same time as their peers.

Access arrangements come in many forms.  Using a human reader is one example, however that can have some negative impacts. It often places the student in an isolated room away from their peers, leaving them feeling singled out. The experience of sitting their exam in the presence of someone dedicated to assist them, can also be daunting and cause additional nerves and stress, potentially preventing them from communicating how they truly want to and having an adverse effect on their formal mark.

A computer reader can help overcome some of these challenges

A computer reader enables students with relevant access arrangements in place, to access exam content without the help of a human reader. Students can effectively interpret information and demonstrate their knowledge, at their own pace.

Read&Write gives control back to students who’d usually require the help of a human reader, letting them sit exams independently and with more confidence, making the exam room fair for students with additional literacy needs. Gone is the embarrassment of having to ask for a question to be read aloud several times. Instead, students can listen back to on-screen text read out loud as many times as they need – in a choice of very natural, human-sounding voices.

“Read&Write has made a huge difference to exam grades particularly in the English language exam where human readers are not allowed. It has allowed pupils more independence and to work at their own pace as well as giving them more confidence. One student refers to it as her 'best friend'”

Louisa Hartley, Arrow Vale Academy

Continual assessment technologies

Enabling a wealth of assessment opportunities

Continual assessment is critical to the teaching and learning process. Providing teachers with a means to measure understanding and progression, and for students the means to reflect, adapt and correct as they learn.

With continuous, summative assessment of learning, educators can monitor student progress, record levels of understanding, recognise where students may be struggling and adapt teaching strategies to support individual student needs. By utilising Assessment for Learning (AfL) strategies, students are provided with feedback and the opportunity for peer and self review - creating independence and the chance to create better outcomes by learning from mistakes.

what our customers in exams and assessment say...

Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District

It’s fantastic being able to practice with a tool like Fluency Tutor, where students can go home at night and hear themselves over and over. That kind of reinforcement is harder to fit into their regular classroom time during the normal school day.
